Workshop: The Secret Language of Light

This course assumes no previous electronics or programming experience.

Over 4 hours, participants will learn the fundamentals of programming microcontrollers and LEDs in a hands-on workshop using the popular Arduino microcontroller. At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to create their own custom light shows. In a follow-up course, we’ll learn to add interactivity to your lighting installations.

REQUIRED MATERIALS
Laptop with USB port (If you don’t have access to a laptop, let us know, and we can provide you with one - supply limited)

INSTRUCTOR BIO
Justin Love is an entrepreneur and multimedia artist based in Victoria, BC, Canada. Justin is a co-founder and CEO of Limbic Media, a company specializing in real-time, interactive media control technologies. Justin has a combined Master’s degree in Computer Science and Visual Arts. During grad school, Justin’s research focused on Metacreation — a field that focuses on endowing machines with human creativity.

Justin’s work has been featured in conferences, performances, and galleries in Canada, Switzerland, USA, China, Mexico, Turkey, and Columbia, including ISEA 2012 (Istanbul), 2015 (Albuquerque), and 2017 (Columbia). Past projects include Praystation (biometric multimedia installation), Grand Theft Bicycle (video game art), Exploding, Plastic & Inevitable Redux (large-scale collaborative multimedia performance), and founding the G++ Interactive Media Gallery — Canada’s first exclusively interactive media gallery (est. 2011).
